🇿🇦🇺🇸 South Africa Prepares Trade Deal Meant to Ease Tensions With Trump

South Africa is preparing a new trade offer to present to President Trump, hoping to appeal to his transactional approach to foreign policy and ease boiling tensions with Washington, a spokesman for South Africa’s president said this week.

The spokesman, Vincent Magwenya, said in an interview that South African officials are anticipating Mr. Trump will call for an end to the African Growth and Opportunity Act, a decades-old trade agreement that has been an economic boon to the 32 African nations that it includes.

One option under consideration is to increase cooperation between the two countries on gas, with the United States getting more access to gas exploration in South Africa and South Africa sourcing more of its gas from America, he said. The proposal also would include a plan for what South Africa would consider fair tariffs, he said.

While South African officials are betting that a favorable trade deal will convince Mr. Trump to work with them, serious obstacles remain.

Emma Louise Powell, a South African lawmaker who met with the Trump administration and members of Congress in Washington last week, said she had been warned South Africa should expect further punitive actions from the United States.

Rasool was addressing the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) in Johannesburg in attempting to explain Trump’s recent foreign policy stances against South Africa’s property expropriation legislation and its alliances with Iran and Hamas, among others.

He said that white supremacism was motivating Trump’s “disrespect” for the “current hegemonic order” of the world, including institutions like the United Nations and the G-20.

He also said that the Make America Great Again movement was a white supremacist response to growing demographic diversity in the United States, and suggested that South African farmers who had presented Afrikaner grievances within the U.S. were part of that global effort

"Threats of violence against Afrikaners in South Africa: While ANC leaders attempt to dismiss AfriForum’s concerns about farm murders and calls for violence against Afrikaners (and whites) as “misinformation,” the threats of violence against Afrikaners and whites made by Ronald Lamola in this video, along with slogans like “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer,” demonstrate that these threats are a reality.

Instead of taking strong action against Lamola’s calls for violence, the ANC promoted him to the point that he is now South Africa’s Minister of International Relations.

The irony is that Lamola is now the one trying to convince President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the legitimate concerns raised by AfriForum, the Solidarity Movement, and Solidariteit are merely “misinformation.” Ebrahim Rasool was also appointed as SA's ambassador to the US under Lamola’s watch.

The threat against Afrikaners in South Africa also includes attempts at “cultural violence,” such as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of the BELA Act, which seeks to dismantle Afrikaans schools and, in turn, threatens the cultural survival of Afrikaans communities."

A South African research team in Antarctica is stuck there for the next 10 months without a way to leave with a crew member who has allegedly become erratic and violent.

The South African scientists are in the Sanae IV research centre in Vesleskarvet, Queen Maud Land. The South African National Antarctic Program runs the base and the South African National Antarctic Expedition operates it.

The Sunday Times reported that a member of the team allegedly physically assaulted a member and sexually assaulted another.
